2015 November Sweeps Wrapup

N2ASD Message As follows,

I am sorry it has taken me some time to post this seeing now that it is about two weeks after the November Sweepstakes for SSB and a month for CW respectively. I did not too bad for CW, netting 104 contacts across 36 sections. However, my life plans and work threw a wrench into the SSB sweeps and I was only able to work about 23 contacts for an hour or 2.... I feel a bit dissapointed in myself but I do have to do what I need to as work is more important than contesting. I am not sure if I am going to do  the ARRL10M contest this year as 10M is a band that is not my forte. I am more used to 15, 20, and 40M myself but if I get bored, I may give it a go.
I can not wait until this spring to show my new antennas as well as the construction of getting them up in the air! I did some research on the HF antenna, and it turns out that I do have a Cushcraft A-3S with a 40M Add on kit with some parts missing! Over the winter, me and my Elmer Phil (W3EBO), are going to work on restoring this to its immaculate condition, along with the 6M antenna I got and ensuring me that things are working well before I hoist the antennas on the tower this spring.
Other than that, I really don't have much to say but enjoy your holidays coming up. Until next time, this is N2ASD signing you clear.

Life, Stepping into the past and new equipment!

N2ASD BLOG  017
FROM N2ASD HQ
NEW YORK,
N2ASD message as follows,
N2ASD message as follows,

Hello, sorry for the random opening, but I have forgot to post about field day and how it went, but now seeing how it is nearly November and that means it is time for the November SWEEPSTAKES! the CW edition this year is on November 7-8 and SSB (Phone) is on the 21-22.

I am happy to say that I am not officially a holder of a bachelor's degree! Even though i did a haphazard job on my senior project and report, I did manage to pass (barely) to earn my degree from SUNY Polytechnic!

This Sunday, I had the honor of stepping into the station of K3KYR, and it felt like a time capsule seeing very era specific radio pieces. A lot of classic tube radios were on display at his location and it was quite an honor to be able to see all of these radios and each radio room set at different time pieces, with my favorite being this one below from the mid 1950s.... I only wish I was alive around the to see the glow of the tubes, the tuning of these classic radios and the smell of warm dust.

As for new equipment, I am proud to see that I am now an owner of an HF Beam! I did pick up a 3 element tribander as well as a 5- element beam for 6m, which I may be planning on retrofitting to 7 elements so I have some ummph for the magic band. I also got some other equipment which would make good use to my station!

The first thing I got was a straight key so I can finally learn the code! I need to pick up a continuity tester in order to use it as a code oscillator so I can learn the sounds and feels of pounding the brass. The second picture is a CDE Tail-Twister II rotor, which is going to come in handy with my beam antennas!!! The last thing may look like a paint can, but it is a dummy load used to test your signals to verify output power to your radios to ensure everything is in order before you sell it! I will be ready for the November sweepstakes, but I wont be breaking in my new key until later as I need to learn the code and be ready to be a good fist with it, as well as having an ear for the code! Until then, this is N2ASD signing you clear and have a good time out on the bands!

Schools over

Well, the post of this explains it all... I am done with college at SUNY Polytechnic!!! With the being done, aside of my senior project which I will have done this summer, I will have my diploma sometime in August. Speaking of which I am back and I am glad to be here again, to talk about more of my nerdiness! I am itching to get back on the air after being absent after the 10M contest, which I got a decent foothold in on my own. Next week I will be posting about 2015 Field Day and my plans for it, so this is a post to say, "Hey I am glad to be back!" ^^

73 to everyone and catch you again

CLEAN SWEEP! And 10m contest Wrap-Up

I am sorry I have neglected to update this in so long, but I have came back with some important news. I have worked the November Sweepstakes SSB last weekend and with the help of Phil Cox (KC5AMQ), we have earned our first clean sweep! A clean sweep is when a contesting station works every section allotable for that contest, in this case, all ARRL and RAC (Radio Amateurs of Canada) Sections. Through the thick and thin, freezing cold and snowstorms at the Jefferson County Amateur Radio Club Facility (KC2ELX), Phil and I did our hardest efforts to provide the clean sweep, as I did many of the more common sections such as Maryland-DC, North Florida, and Santa Clara Valley for examples; Phil worked out the diamonds in the rough such as Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut of Canada, Canadian Maritime (Which consists of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island), and Quebec. We totaled out with 318 QSOs and a final score of 52788. We also helped K7SS (Dan Eskenazi) obtain his clean sweep by providing him with our NNY section exchange that he desperately needed!

Aside from that, Phil and I did a good run on the CW sweepstakes two weeks ago, only missing the sections of Vermont, Northern Territories, Alberta, and our own section; Northern New York. We finished the CW Sweeps with a score of 35708 with 227 QSOs.

To break the monotony here are some nicknames for the ARRL and RAC Sections I (and others) came up with

GTA(Greater Toronto Area): Grand Theft Auto
NFL(Northern Florida): National Football League
SFL(Southern Florida): Soviet Football League (Created by Phil)
SB(Santa Barbara): Spongebob
MT(Montana): Mike Tango's (Ironically, those are the phonetics for Montana)
EWA(Eastern Washington): Empty part of Washington
SDG(San Diego): Super Dog
EPA(Eastern Pennsylvania): Environmental Protection Agency
NM(New Mexico): Nothing Much
NLI(NYC/Long Island): Nearly Limited and Impossible
NNY(North New York): Nothing part of New York (There were 6 Operators in this section counting myself and Phil working as a team)

My award for most original Callsign has to go to WA5ZUP (John Elsik of New Mexico who was his ACTUAL first callsign and not a vanity like mine!) WAZZZUP and thanks for the QSO WA5ZUP!

The next ARRL Contest on the docket (and last I will compete in of 2014) is the 10 meter contest, which was on the Weekend of December 13th. I used a homebrew 10m dipole and got 52 QSLs on it.... Only problem I have with it is I am not a major fan of 10m... Call me crazy but I am not a fan of that band... I do not like how it is dependent of the solar cycle and the time of day, and the need of a mulch-element beam to make good contacts on it. Until next time this is N2ASD signing you clear

Vacation wrapup and Something special!!!

Hello Everyone,

I just returned from vacation from Washington state, and I had a very fun time out there! I got to see one of my older brothers for the first time in almost 10 years, and it was very very fun! While I was there, I officially ended my search for a new HF amateur radio rig and here is what I have decided on, in case you missed my QRZ.com webpage update...

What you are looking at is a Yaesu 450D HF/6m transciever, brand new out of the Ham Radio Outlet from Portland, OR. I was going to go there, but my brother had car problems so I decided to order this thing online. To top it all of during my trip there, I did get W1AW Portable 7 in Arizona on 20m using only 5W with this radio, which I think is an achievement of itself. Unfortunately that was the only QSO I could get on HF while I was out there, but I did hear a strong signal the next day from DF2BO in Germany on 15m, but operating QRP I think he couldn't hear me.

Also, when I returned, I found out I may have to put off my last year of college because plans have changed, I applied to be a Residential Assistant, or RA for next year. I was hoping to use it to make up for what I won't be getting for state aid next year, as I have went over my limit for what I can get through New York state for aid for college. Unfortunately, I did not get the position and I may be considering dropping out of college after I finish this semester. I think I may be able to find work somewhere with my Associate's degree I picked up at least, but only time will tell as I have 7 weeks left this semester to make a decision.

This weekend I will have a Vlog showing the 450D in action on my G5RVjr, and maybe throw a little PSK31 in as well. Until next time this is N2ASD signing you clear, and 73 to you all!

Future plans for this blog and vlogging

Hello everybody,

As the title of this blog suggests, I am in the consideration of making some major changes to my blog. I feel like I am starting to run out of ham radio related things to talk about, at least for right now, and I want to bring the attention to other things in my life. Things such as video gaming, computer programming, and the like. If you have any suggestions on what I can do to make this blog any better, please leave a comment below.

Also, with the acquiring of a new digital camera which is below I feel like every once a month, as well as special occasions (i.e. radio un-boxings, etc.) I am going to be posting a vlog of what is going on in regards to everything, and not just amateur radio all in 720HD. I am surprised this little thing can shoot video in HD, and it is what made it stand out from other cameras I was considering!
